Nothing is ever easy...

Remember that shelving system from the Container Store that I was talking about wanting for Shawn's room? Well, we ended up getting it and the final boxes arrived yesterday. Elfa shelving is supposed to be super easy to install so Don was going to install it tonight when he got home from work. After taking the top bracket and hardware out of the box, he realized he didn't have the right size masonry bit so off the Lowe's to buy one. Elfa gives you hardware to go through wood or masonry. But what happens if you have to go through wood and masonry? After drilling the first hole, he realized that there was a layer of wood between the drywall and concrete block. This creates a dilemma for us and now I'm not sure how we are going to get this shelving to work. Just to clarify, the wood is only about 3/4" thick...like a piece of plywood and the concrete block is right behind the wood. We are thinking because of the distance between the drywall and concrete, the shelving won't be as strong. The top bracket is the only thing attached to the wall so I think it better be secured. I guess I'm going to call the Container Store to see if they have a solution. Don has an idea but I'm not too keen on it yet.

I'm a dummy when it comes to this kind of thing, but could you buy extra long screws that would reach into the concrete?

You definitely need to make sure that it is secure since your little monkey-boy Joshua will surely find his way up to the top shelf.

There's usually firing strips attached to the block so that they have something to attach the drywall to. They are usually 1x2's spaced every 18-24 inches. I'm sure Andrea's dh could tell you more.
